Office Wi-Fi slow? 5 common reasons
- One router trying to cover the whole floor. Add access points instead of a bigger router.
- Walls, glass and metal racks block the signal. Place access points in the open, near the ceiling.
- Neighbouring networks on the same channel. A proper survey picks clean channels.
- Old devices slowing everyone down. Keep laptops and phones on 5 GHz where possible.
- Guests on the staff network. Give visitors a separate guest Wi-Fi.
The 3-2-1 backup rule
Keep 3 copies of important data, on 2 different kinds of storage (for example a NAS and the cloud), with 1 copy outside the office. Test a restore every few months: a backup you have never restored is only a hope.
How much CCTV storage do I need?
It depends on the number of cameras, their resolution, the compression (H.265 uses about half the space of H.264) and how many days you keep. As a rough guide, one 4 MP camera on H.265 recording all day uses about 20 GB a day, so 8 cameras for 30 days need roughly 5 TB. Our setup planner above works it out for you.
Why a UTM firewall and not just a router?
A router connects you to the internet. A UTM firewall also blocks viruses and phishing sites, filters websites, gives staff a safe VPN from home and shows who is using the bandwidth. For any office with customer data or online payments it is the first line of defence.
Change these default passwords today
Wi-Fi router admin, CCTV recorder (NVR/DVR), printers and the firewall all ship with known default passwords. Change each one to a long unique password, and turn off remote access you do not use.
